We are ecstatic to present a new exhibition here at Merivale Studios, with works by the incredible weaving artist Monique Ross. Monique creates weaved sculptures and vessels which show an impressive patience, dexterity, and eye for colours and shapes. We love her work so much and are so excited for her to share her pieces with you all!
The exhibition will run from 23-25th October.

What holds you together when you’re falling apart?
Monique Ross weaves contemporary vessels that play with colour, texture, form and scale, and push the boundaries of what basketry can be.
Coping Mechanisms explores the messy beauty of the human experience: the things that wear us down, the things that help us through, the things that bind us together.
The works move through feelings of anxiety, self-doubt, anger and despair, alongside love, joy, and hope.
Coping Mechanisms is an invitation to pause and consider what sustains you, and the ways seemingly small things can accumulate into something meaningful.
OFRENDA 2026 Amor y Memoria is a transformative Mexican arts and cultural event celebrating Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead).
Join us in celebration of rich and diverse Mexican cultures, where ancestral memory and contemporary artistic practices are woven together. Visual art, storytelling, music, performance, workshops, and traditional cuisine unite around an ofrenda (altar/offering) at the centre of festivities.
Merivale Studios will host the OFRENDA 2026 visual art exhibition, showcasing more than 60 artists from Mexico and the global Mexican diaspora. Visitors will have the opportunity to experience the richness of Mexican cultures through art, and also purchase works. The general public can visit Merivale Studios in the lead up to see the team hand-crafting decorations for the ofrenda every Sunday between 1:00-4:00pm.
OFRENDA provides an opportunity for Brisbane/Meanjin’s Mexican diaspora to connect around tradition and for the wider community to appreciate Día de Muertos as a vibrant, living celebration of contemporary cultural identity rooted in Indigenous cultures.
The 2026 First Nations curatorial collaboration between Cempoaxochitl Artists Collective and Makayla Dass (Guugu Yimithirr, Kuku Yalanji) extends this conversation, bringing Mexican and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists together to reflect on culture, memory, Country and the ways cultural practices are carried forward today.

Presented by Cempoalxochitl Arts Collective and BEMAC, in collaboration with Meanjin Mexican Community. Supported by Fish Lane Arts Precinct, QPAC, and Merivale Studios. OFRENDA takes place on Yuggera and Turrbul Country.
BEMAC is a subsidiary of SSI and supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
As visitors, migrants, and immigrants, we acknowledge that this event takes place on unceded Aboriginal lands, and pay our respects to the custodians of Country as the first artists of these lands. Always was, always will be.
